A Path to Affordable Homeownership

Habitat partners with local families to build safe, affordable homes in La Plata County.

Who Qualifies?

Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County considers applicants based on three fundamental principles:

Need for Affordable Housing

Applicants must demonstrate a need for safe, decent, and affordable housing. This may include housing that is inadequate, overcrowded, or financially difficult to maintain.

Ability to Pay an Affordable Mortgage

Homeownership is a financial commitment. Applicants must demonstrate the ability and willingness to make monthly mortgage payments. Habitat La Plata County bases mortgage affordability on approximately 30% of a household's gross (pre-tax) monthly income.

Willingness to Partner

Habitat homeownership requires active participation. Selected applicants must be willing to work alongside Habitat staff, volunteers, and other community members throughout the process, including completing required sweat equity hours.

Additional eligibility considerations include household income guidelines, residency, background checks, and credit requirements.

Meeting these general qualifications does not guarantee selection. Each application is reviewed through Habitat La Plata County's selection process.
