A Path to Affordable Homeownership in La Plata County

Everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home. Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County partners with local individuals and families to make the dream of homeownership more attainable.

Our Homeownership Program helps hardworking individuals and families build a foundation for a stronger future through affordable homeownership, partnership, and community support.

Through Habitat, future homeowners work alongside volunteers and our community to help build their homes while preparing for the responsibilities of owning and maintaining a home. Together, we create more than houses — we help build stability, opportunity, and stronger communities throughout La Plata County.

How Our Homeownership Program Works

Habitat homeownership is a partnership. Selected applicants work with Habitat throughout the process, contributing their time and effort while preparing to purchase an affordable home.

1. Apply

Start by submitting a homeownership application along with the required supporting documents. This helps our team understand your household, current housing situation, and eligibility.

2. Application Review

Our team reviews your application to evaluate your housing needs, financial situation, and ability to participate in the program.

3. Meet With Our Team

Qualified applicants will have an opportunity to meet with our team, discuss the program, and learn more about what becoming a Habitat homeowner involves.

4. Partner With Habitat

Once approved, future homeowners begin their partnership with Habitat. This includes completing required sweat equity hours, working alongside volunteers, and participating in the homeownership process.

5. Prepare for Homeownership

Future homeowners work toward completing their partnership requirements and preparing for the responsibilities of homeownership. Financial literacy and preparation are important parts of building a strong foundation for long-term success.

6. Purchase Your Home

Once program requirements are completed and the home is ready, homeowners move forward with closing on their affordable Habitat mortgage and moving into their new home.
