Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County (HFHLPC) philosophy is that shelter is a basic human need and that everyone deserves a simple, decent place in which to live and grow. We believe that without decent shelter, people are robbed of hope for the future. By working together, volunteers and families transcend cultural, status, and racial boundaries while providing affordable homeownership.
Our main focus in the housing arena is providing single family homeownership housing which we believe serves to empower and provide a healthy approach to community. In 2014, over 51.5% of those employed in La Plata County, fell within our income guidelines set by HUD. Thus, the need for affordable housing is huge and homeownership provides the stability for families to grow. Our relationship with our families is a partnership. As we seek to secure land and funding they commit to educational classes, financial literacy support and sweat equity hours. Habitat partner families must invest “sweat equity” in helping to build their home and make affordable monthly mortgage payments on their loan. We are a hand up, not a hand out.
For questions on our Home Ownership Program, please note if your household income falls within the HUD FY 2016 Income Guidelines of 30%-60% Average median Income.
“We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.”
